Blockchain In Plantation

We made a visit to Sime Darby Plantation (SDP) on 17th october 2018 to explore further how blockchain technology could bring good to the agriculture industry.

According to Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM)’s data, in 2016, agriculture sector stood at 8.1 per cent or RM89.5 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Oil palm was a major contributor to the GDP of agriculture sector at 43.1%.

While the statement “Blockchain adoption can help identify certified palm oil operations with ethical practices and allow buyers to identify the source of their palm oil before making a purchase” is quite academic and theoretical, the challenge of making it a successful use case lies further on the business process integration and perhaps a bolder, disruptive new economic model.

Another interesting area we discussed about was the Sustainable Development Goals (hashtag#SDG) that SDP is actively involve in. As we are drafting the UN SDG blueprint for team Malaysia working along with hashtag#DOSM, we see possible interaction here in getting more industry input to facilitate our report.

Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It’s about impact, influence and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire team-mates and customers. ~ Robin S. Sharma

All in all, it was a good meet up and we are good to go with next meeting for feasibility studies.
